Submitted By Matt Hall: Eagle Scout Candidate-This is the level of detail we request from anyone considering an Eagle Scout Project.  If you cannot provide this level of comprehensive planning we suggest you apply elsewhere. 

Project Description:

 My Eagle Project is a two part project for the Raptor Education Foundation (REF).

1. The first project that I will plan, organize, manage and direct will be to put kitchen cabinets and a kitchen counter in a barn. This will involve tearing out the old shelving, installing a floor, placing the cabinets, hanging the upper cabinets and installing a kitchen counter.
2. The second project that I will plan, organize, manage and direct will be to line the walls of the four raptor cages with ¼” hardboard. This will involve cutting the wallboard and nailing it into the cages in the back, ceiling and wall.

 Benefiting Organization

This project will benefit the REF. The REF is a nonprofit organization founded in 1980. The Foundation takes in birds of prey that have been injured. The Foundation is unable to release the birds into the wild because they are injured beyond repair. The other function the REF serves is to educate kids and adults about the importance of birds in the wild environment. They bring the birds that they have with them to teach and help other people to understand the importance of raptors. . Project 1 will benefit the Foundation because they will have more space for storage:  to store items like food, gloves, cleaning utensils, and many other things. Project 2 will benefit the REF with lining that will help keep out rats and mice. It will keep the raptors out of the insulation and it will give the barn a better appearance.

 Project Details

Project 1

The REF facility is located at the .......... in Aurora. My project will take place in the barn at this location. I am working with Anne Price, the head of the facility. The barn is currently used for storage, food prep, training, housing, and holding smaller birds. The present condition of the barn is messy and scattered and is in need of more storage space. The barn looks like a lifted up lean to. The floor in the barn is gravel and the walls are insulated but they don’t have any interior wallboard on them. The tip of the barn reaches 14’ tall, and the back reaches 7’ tall. It has two rooms. The first room (where we will put the cabinets) is 17’ long by 15’ wide. The cabinets will be installed on the wall that is tallest (the south wall).  The south wall has studs in it that are 16 inch on center, so we can easily hang the cabinets. There are raptor cages along the north wall. There is 8’ between the south wall and the raptor cages.

REF and Anne Price are providing the cabinets for the project. They are used cabinets and will run 7’6” long along the south wall. We do need a counter top and JR’s Custom Woodwork has offered to donate one from their business. We can have a maximum of 6 people working in the barn where we will be putting in the cabinets. All the trash that is collected will be loaded up and disposed of properly. Water will be available through the day in a big five gallon insulated water container.

The project will entail:

·        Tearing the shelving out that is on the south wall.

·        Cleaning out the area where the cabinets will be installed.

·        Installing a cement block floor for the cabinets to sit on.

·        Installing the cabinets along the wall.

·        Hanging the upper cabinets.

·        Installing the kitchen counter on the cabinets.

·        Installing a 1/4” sheathing on the unfinished wall.

·        Cleaning up the area.

 Project 2

 In a different section of the same barn there are four pens that need to be lined. They will be lined with ¼”hard board sheets that are white on the outside. Each of the pens has a back wall of 72 x 83 and a ceiling of 72 x 84 that need lining. I will nail them to the wall. The first and last pens also have one wall each that need lining. I will be getting donations to buy the supplies for the pen lining. I will need to purchase 20 - 4x8 sheets of ¼” hardboard at ____ per sheet.

The project will entail:

·        Measuring and cutting the ¼” hardboard sheets to size then, nailing them onto the wall.

·        Nailing a 1x2 pine strip over each hardboard seam.

·        Cleaning up the area.

• There will be an announcing of my project to my troop. There will be a volunteer sheet out for volunteers to sign up. There will also be a parent car pool sheet and sign up sheet. The adults that sign up to help me with the project will be eligible to sing up for car pooling.

 Car Pool Detail

For the transportation of my volunteers to the REF, a car pool will be organized. We will need two cars and a pick-up. The pick up will be used to take the cabinets to REF.  This driver will go with me to pick up the cabinets at Anne Price’s house. The other volunteers will meet at Belleview Acres church. The cars will take the volunteers to the REF location.  Each driver will be provided with a map of how to get to the REF. There will also be tools which can go in one of the cars. I will ask for drivers when I ask for my volunteers.

 Lunch Detail

 Lunch will include cold cuts (turkey, and ham) chips, Kool-aid and fruit.  Water will be provided throughout the day. There will be two 5 gallon containers with ice. Donations for lunch will be from local grocery stores.

 First Aid & Safety

 The hazards that hopefully nobody will face are: snake bites, dehydration, heat stroke, scrapes/ bruises, cuts by tools or wood and insect bites. For the safety of my volunteers there will be a first aid kit, water, snake bite kit, 2 blankets, and ice. Other items we will use are cups for water. Aurora Medical Center is the closest hospital. The number for the Hospital is 303-695-2600. If 911 doesn’t respond, our back up plan will be to take the person to Aurora Medical Center as shown on the map. In case of a snake bite or other poisonous injury, the poison control number is 303-739-1123.

 Step-by-Step instructions

 1.      8:00 - leave front side of the Belleview Acres Church: scouts and adults should be dressed appropriate for weather.

2.      9:00 - Arrive at raptor society.

3.      9:00-9:15 - Walk through the barn and explain the project and where everything goes. Split the volunteers into 2 groups.

4.      9:15-10:45 - work on project. Group 1 lay floor covering and work on bottom cabinets. Group 2 begin putting up bottom walls.

5.      10:45-11:00 - break

6.      11:00-12:15 - work on project. Group 1 lay floor covering and work on bottom cabinets. Group 2 begin putting up top walls

7.      12:15-12:45 - lunch

8.      12:45-2:45 - work on project. Group 1 work on top cabinets. Group 2 work on top walls

9.      2:45-3:00 - break

10.  3:00-4:30 - work on project Group 1 finish top cabinets. Group 2 finish top walls

11.  4:30-4:45 – break

12.  4:45-5:45 -.Finish all work on cabinets and walls.

13.  5:45-6:00-clean up

14.  6:00-6:15 load cars and head home.

15.  7:00-arive at church parents will pick up kids.
